Crazy beautiful 2001
These are real-life characters and they are notoverly stereotyped which was surprising, as well. I think everyone will be able to relate to the characters andstory in this movie.
The story is very simple and justchronicles the life of these two high-schoolers who fall in love bypure chance (the romance is instigated by Dunst and she does a greatjob). I felt like I was eavesdropping in on two youngteenagers throughout the whole movie. The chemistry betweenher and the boyfriend is the best you will ever see and that's why Iwatched this movie. I caught five minutes of this then decided to watch more of it and Iwas pleasantly surprised at what a superb actress Kirsten Dunst is! Sheis so natural and at ease in front of a camera. Crazy/Beautiful is inspired a little by the inter racial aspect of therelationship but much more by the veracity of the performances. Dad certainly doesn't think he has all ofthe answers. Jay is level headedbut becomes overwhelmed by Nicole. Nicole is a carouser, drunk or stoned most of the time. The film is mindfulof how complicated real people are. These characters are flawed and therefore interesting. Now this sounds fairly ho hum but is brought successfully to the screen byvery strong acting performances from both Dunst and Hernandez and also byBruce Davison who plays Nicole's Dad Tom. Carlos hopes to go to the navy academyand become a pilot. She's on a path of self destruction, at leastacademically, probably physically. He's from a poor family and keen to dowell at his studies. Nicole and Carlos hit it off in spite of Carlos's reservations aboutthe wild (crazy/beautiful) Nicole. In Crazy Beautiful Kirsten Dunst (Interview With A Vampire, Bring It On)plays Nicole a rich girl at high school who befriends a first generationMexican lad called Carlos (Jay Hernandez). A definate thumbs up for a night's rental. The film itself, because of the subject material, is somewhat lethargic, butdoes keep one's interest in its presentation. The film gets a touch melodramatic at points, and there's no one actor toreally single out as all the leads have their moment of high energy atvarious points in the film. On thisscore the film is rather accurate. This makes for some interestinginteraction which, in the real world, I've personally observed. The overall theme vascillates by placing the ball into each of the leadscourt at various points in the film. "Crazy/Beautiful" focuses on the teenagers, butshows the flavors of the leads' respective cultures, and how they are ableto combine both their intellect and emotions to overcome some verysuperficial barriers, which create profound rifts among humansociety. The thing about teenage movies isthat the really good ones don't placate exclusively to the age bracket ofwhich the film is about. I was wrong, but pleasantly dissapointed. I saw one promo for this film some time after I saw "Bring it On," andthought it was another Kirsten Dunst comedy. Don'texpect greatness, but don't be shocked if you like it. crazy near theend but recovers nicely - and without being too preachy or schmaltzy. And good performances apparentlyrubbed off on Hernandez as well, giving sensational insight into aconflicted character torn between duty to family and education versus hislove for Dunst. But even "screwed up" people needlove, too, and you do want her to succeed. You do feel something for hercharacter, as screwed up as she can be. Dunst is already familiar to filmaudiences - making great strides at a very young age with Vampire - butthis could arguably be her finest turn. With the dialogue seeming mostly improvisational, the romance is impressively convincing. Senator, and Hernandez as the intelligent inner-city kid meet up andfall in love - takes on a fresh twist (and "fresh" is a good thing -especially in film today). What looks like the set-up of a cliché-filledstoryline on the outside - high-schoolers Dunst as the troubled daughter ofa U.S.

The reason would be the two leads, Kirsten Dunst (Interview with theVampire, Bring It On) and Jay Hernandez (only having done a handful of TVand small movie work).
